Dayara Bugyal Trek

The pasture uplands of Uttarakhand’s alpine heights are focal points for many of our splendid treks in the region. These are the Bugyals—fecund grassy uplands secreted away in mountain laps where shepherds take their herds in summer days before the winter snow renders them fallow. Dayara is a relatively lesser known Bugyal, accessible from Uttarkashi by just a short, crisp trek but it is one that pays off magnificent rewards.

Dayara in the local tongue refers to a circular plot of land, reflecting the hoop shaped grassy turf of this Bugyal, margined by dark oak and maple woods and beyond the green reaches, a glowing snowline of the Bandarpoonch and other ranges. A rambling walk through the undulated pastures of Dayara will bring you out of the world frames of its green ecosystem, the whispering wilderness of the oak woods, and somewhere far away, a breathless peak view panorama gradually unveiling. Along the entire stretch, at different junctures, you can catch glimpses of the Gangotri set of peaks, Srikanth peak, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak.

Another high point of the journey comes on the fourth day when we are ascending to 12, 100 ft. from our Dayara campsite to Dayara Top. A ridge walk takes you to convergences of many adjoining meadows including the Giddara Bugyal. You will also find a descent trail to Dodital- a fresh water lake which is the origin of Assi Ganga. The summer meadows are infused on this stretch with a spray of wildflowers, all yellow. On all of this paradisiacal effervescence, the snow thatched Bandarpoonch will cast an iridescent impression. The walk ambles down from here to Barsu, a pretty settlement memorable for its silkenly flowing buckwheat fields and poppy beds and a warm shelter at the end.

  • First timer can apply, should have some interest in trek and mountaineering.
  • Before reaching the village, we make a last stop at Barnala, a small crystal waterhole flanked by a temple of the Nag Devata.
  • Dayara Bugyal Trek is an excellent choice for beginners, makes for a phantasmagorical photo-op, and an absolute delight for naturalists.

    Sandakphu Trek

Sandakphu throws open an incredible panorama of world’s highest snowline, swerving from the snow ensconced peaks of Nepal to Bhutan and farther east to Tibet. The trek route zigzags along the Singalila Ridge and moves this side and that of the Indo-Nepal border, switch backing and switch-bordering towards a enchanting visually charged summit that makes it all worth it.

The charming wilderness and wildlife expected of a Himalayan Trek is met as we pass through Singalila National Park, making the hike also one of keen naturalist interests. There are innumerable intriguing bird life, animals, and flora that you would be fascinated to explore in the diversity along this trek route’s sub-alpine and temperate coniferous, broadleaf, and subtropical coniferous forest biomes.

The route is not really out of civilization’s way. Lined with quaint localities inhabited even through long winters and their economy depending largely upon the Sandakphu Phalut Trek and tourism which run round the year, the route is logical, realistic, and “safe” in many regards. Sandakphu-Phalut trek is also one of those few high-altitude Himalayan treks which are provided through and through with comfortable teahouse accommodation.

    Highlights-

    A Mesmeric High Peak Panorama

What stand Sandakphu out as a journey are many things—the replete hairpin bend ridden Old Silk Road route to the base camp, the impeccable hospitality of the people of Sikkim and Nepal along the way at the teahouses, the charming green haven of Singalila, and the theatre of the clouds. But it’s the absolutely mesmeric peak view that brings a climax so superb!
The greatest of the greats unravel and shine their glory beams on this Everest view trek as the sun comes up every day and we are moving inches closer to the top-

  • Makalu- one of the eight-thousanders of the world and the fifth highest stands at 27, 838 ft., visible in the Everest range of peaks along the horizon from Sandakphu summit on a clear day.
  • Lhotse- Meaning the “south peak” in Tibetan is part and parcel of the Everest massif and forms one of the most marked climbing routes of the world’s highest summit through Everest’s South Col. Lhotse is also the fourth highest peak, toweringly present from the vantage point of Sandakphu.
  • Everest- The world’s highest peak towers over the above two. A pair of powerful binoculars will bring the Lhotse Face zone of the Everest climbing route closer, where it joins with South Col, when looking on from Sandakphu. The view from Phalut trekking in India, extending further from Sandakphu will bring this glorious ice capped tower even closer.
  • The Ultimate Vision of Kangchenjunga

The Kanchenjunga family of peaks had to come as a different pointer. The sunlight streaming upon this ice ensconced conglomerate becomes a vision to behold from early on, on this trek. Looking out of your Tumling teahouse at dawn reveals the “Sleeping Buddha” structure of the Kanchenjunga in its relentless glory, and comes to get bigger and sharper as we approach summit.
Gold and amber spreading through the crystal vision of Kanchenjunga up close at sunrise and sunset on this prized trek in West Bengal, makes moments you should reserve for your most prized photo-ops.

    Rhododendron and Magnolia Spring

Spring comes in these mountains in plenitude of colours. Cottony white Magnolias and pink-red rhododendrons sweep the slopes with the spirit of summer mirth. There is a festive feel to the days of Singalila forest walks on this trek in the north east at the height of spring that you must look out for.
    The Elusive Red Panda
The Singalila National Park is the natural home to red pandas. These charming but elusive creatures move inside the jungles hopping in the trees and you just might get lucky enough to catch one in your photo frame!

    Kalipokhri- The Black Lake

On Day 3, we will reach the Kalipokhri settlement build around the small lake of Kalipokhri. Literally meaning black water, this little waterhole makes for a quiet, contemplative, and picturesque site cradled amidst the gorgeous mountainous terrain with the Kanchenjunga beckoning in the distance. This area is well within the Nepal border and shows the signs of the ethno-religious Buddhist community of Nepal living in the Kalipokhri settlement. Prayer flags strung around the lake flutter in the wind as the sun starts to dip behind ice peaks soon after we reach the site on Day 3.

Sandakphu happens to be a mixed terrain trek with no abrupt height gain and mostly swinging through a tree cover, therefore remaining clear of the risks of Altitude Sickness. However, the sheer distance can be challenging and one must prepare for lasting stamina to make this trek a success.

    Kanamo Peak

Opening up a brilliant view of the Kinnaur Lahaul Spiti area from a height of 19, 600 feet, Kanamo Peak is a fascinating trek. It offers a different quality of the Himalayas—arid mountain deserts and sparse vegetation with only a touch of snow in the summit stretch.

On the way you will stop at exotic villages of Spiti and get to experience the delights of their harvest season in August. The villages on the Kaza to Kibber stretch are famous for growing sweet green peas and the lush green patches of pea fields amidst the mountain desert is a sight to behold!

Another highlight of this trek is the mixed ground of snow and boulder moraine or scree. This makes for a loose base and a precarious trek. You can overcome the risks with a little support from your trek guide and by learning the trick of walking with big and bold steps. Though you are not likely to find deep snow in Kanamo in August until the summit climbing stretch, strong advice goes for carrying crampons and other snow trekking essentials.

The Kanamo Peak Trek demands a good level of fitness and a few high-altitude treks to the trekker’s credits. We have made this trip agreeable with an entire day for acclimatization and rest at the base camp, but nothing can make up for faltering fitness.

Start following a health regime as per our guide for difficult level treks at least three months prior to the trip.

    Chadar Frozen River Trek

This is a dream of every avid trekker – from India and across the world. It derives its name from the thin layer of ice formed over the Zanskar River in Winter. At an altitude of 11,123 feet, you need to be ready for some frozen surprises. The 9 day trek covers a distance of approx 75 kms – most of which is on the ‘Chadar’. Continual walking on the frozen ice makes the icy layer thin down a bit or at some places, even break. The sweet gurgling sound of the river is music to ears and a hint towards an adventure lying ahead. The desire to see the unseen, to explore the unexplored, the will to know your limits to push, has upsurged visitors to the Chadar trek. It is the most popular trek or a winter trek to be precise. Situated in the Zanskar region of the Jammu Kashmir state, the trail of Zanskar river tends to freeze in extremely cold conditions, forming a thick covering which can be stepped on. Well, this may sound as fun as skating on ice, the only difference is that skating on ice is much safer than walking on Chadar.

    The Start of the Journey

The journey starts at the mountain town of Leh. The only way to reach Leh is by flight and it is surrounded by snow giving it a complete white look. One can catch a glimpse of the snow capped mountains from the flight as it descends toward Leh which is located at 11400 feet above sea level. The trek is over the Zanskar River which lies frozen during the winter. The most preferred time to cross the ice would be in February. During that time, the ice tends to be at its most stable state. The Frozen River Trek begins from the small village of Chilling from where the Zanskar River begins to freeze.

“Chadar is one of the most challenging treks. The temperatures at the trail can go as low a -30C, which calls for ample physical and mental endurance,” says Rakesh Pant, founder-partner, Trek the Himalayas.

    Across the Ice

The ice can be as dangerous at times as it can be safe during others. One needs to figure out the safe paths over the precarious sheet and must always be aware of the ice conditions below the feet. The trekkers can choose to camp in the caves along the banks like the locals or set up tents where the ice is the most stable. The setting is close to twenty degrees below freezing point and decreases further after sundown as well. Warm and layered clothes are recommended as is being on the move as much as possible. These help invariably in keeping the body warm and prevent cold sores and also keep the blood from freezing.

Emily Bridger, a trekker with Trek the Himalayas says, “The Chadar trek is an unforgettable experience. I have travelled worldwide but here I have witnessed some best natural views. The experience has made a mark on life.”

    Better Safe than Sorry

It is always recommended to be aware of the ice conditions at all times. There are several factors to consider ensuring a safe journey. Most of these factors involve the conditions of the ice and the footing choices of the trekker. The precautions include:

    • The trekker must be aware of the ice sheet conditions.
    • There may be cracks in the ice which should be avoided.
    • Finding places with a coating of snow is the best place to walk normally.
    • Slippery ice can be found on several sections as well and should be walked on with utmost care.
    • Cracks may suddenly appear under one’s feet and it is required to run to more solid footing immediately.
    • The ice is not a trekker’s friend and one should always respect it and be aware of the conditions at all times especially while choosing the camping spot.

Steeped in mythos, Brahmatal is a lake nestling in the depths of Uttarakhand Himalayas. Winter sweeps alluringly on the slopes here, making Brahmatal one of the rare Himalayan destinations available for trekking in December, January, February, and March.

Pull factors are many on this trek—changing vistas, from deep and shadowy forests of oaks and rhododendrons to snow-covered meadows, lakeside camping at Bekaltal, the alpine Brahmatal lake vicinity, and a climactic vision of fabulous high peaks glittering across a brilliant sky! The Garhwal snowline view is all the more special from here because rarely are colossal ice-capped peaks like Mt. Nanda Ghunti and Mt. Trishul are accessible to view on a low-lying trek like this one.

Owing to gradually ascending rolling slopes, the Brahmatal Trek route is deemed fit for beginners and less experienced trekkers. A major part of the trek continues under forest cover, diminishing the chances of altitude sickness. All the same, the trek will not deprive one of an out and out thrilling winter experience with the sweet mellow of falling snow, a fascinating trail caught in an absolute white out, the depthless silence inside the grove of rhododendrons and oaks, and iced over lake water faces.

A special shout out for this trek goes to the shutterbugs—diverse frames, from snow-laden forests to white-gold high peaks in alpenglow, and a desolate alpine mountain-scape of a lone tree standing on icy shores of the Brahmatal lake make up the composition of this trek.

    Tarsar Marsar Trek

One day, if you wake up in the meadows of Kashmir on your trek to Tarsar Marsar, in that moment, your entire life is going to dissolve into a distant dream. As though you have just crossed the threshold and come to heaven. The famous couplet of the Persian poet shall ring true— if there is a paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here!

The valley of Kashmir is an experience that may rob the most masterful wordsmith off adjectives, but never fail to brew unceasing lyricism in the heart of her beholders. Kashmir’s inherent classical romanticism aside, there are some things exclusively special to trekking and the Tarsar Marsar twin lakes trek brings all of them together.

Grasslands like velvet, walking through hovering pine trees that are beautiful and fragrant, little thatched roofed hamlets peopled by beautiful humans, perfect stillness of azure waters, and camping by the glacial lakes which give the trek its name. What’s more wonderful, on practical trekking terms, Tarsar Marsar doesn’t charge a great deal of physical challenge, acclimatization prerequisites, or exhaustion.

Special Note: Lately, there has been much apprehension regarding treks in Kashmir owing to perennial reports of trouble brewing in the valley. Therefore, in a responsibly organized journey, with some foresight, we wish to add an extra day or two in the 7-day itinerary. If we must make an emergency halt, the need for which we pray doesn’t occur, these buffer days will be useful. This can be confirmed and elaborated upon at the time of your trek registration.

    Winter Kuari Pass Trek

Among the several things that Lord Curzon did in India, the hands-down winner is exploration and popularising of a marquee trek route starting from Joshimath to Kuari Pass in the Garhwal Himalayas. At an altitude of 4264 meters, Kuari Top is like an amphitheatre where some of the stalwart peaks of Himalayas take stage. The 7000 meters club includes the Kamet (7756m),Trishul (7120m), Chaukhamba (7128m), and the great divine peak of Nanda Devi (7817m) and its twin Nanda Devi East (7434m). More peaks make an equally imposing appearance – Nanda Ghunti, Hathi Ghoda Parbat, Neelkanth, Dronagiri, Mukut Parbat, Mana, Rishi Pahad, and Changbang, to name a few. The Kuari Pass Trek gives you a chance to view this impressive skyline of these mighty mountains from close quarters.

The trek begins from Joshimath, in the Chamoli district of Himalayas, which has evolved into the hub for trekkers and pilgrims in this part of the Himalayas. Confluences of several rivers - the Pinder, Kaliganga, Nandakini, Birehiganga & Dhauli Ganga give make up the Pancha-Prayag – namely, Devprayag, Karnaprayag, Devprayag and Rudraprayag. The trek then proceeds through small remote Himalayan villages. Walking along the Curzon trail through these villages is a great way to get acquainted with the life of the mountain folks. The trees are ablaze in the yellow-orange colors of autumn, striking a deep contrast to the blue-brown mountains and the snow caps. On this trek one walks through gorgeous jungles of Oak and Deodar trees. And these jungles, of course, are house to some wildlife. Pug marks of leopards or Himalayan black bears can be sighted in the forests. Rhododendron trees, which bear flowers of a fiery red color, are also found in abundance in these mountains.

The truly refreshing part of the trek is while walking through the luxurious Himalayan meadows, called 'Bugyals' in the local tongue. The beauty and serenity of a Himalayan meadow is an experience no one should miss out on. The most remarkable is the Gorson Bugyal, consisting of vast undulating green pastures. On this trek you will also visit Auli, which is famous for its beautiful skiing slopes in the winter kuari pass

The trek takes you up and down a few other lesser passes – the Vinayak pass and Tali top, eventually taking you to the highest point in the trek – the Kuari Top at which is at 13990 feet. This trek is not too difficult, and pays huge dividends for the physical effort with the most mesmerising views of some of the best mountains in the Himalayan Range. The sight of the Nanda Devi Massif is the highlight of this trek. So if you want to have some fun in the meadows and on the snowy slopes of the Garhwal Himalayas, pack your rucksacks and head on towards Haridwar. The TTH team will take you on the Curzon Trail to Kuari Pass, while you feast your eyes on the spectacular sights.

We have sketched out an itinerary slotting in all the best attractions the trail has to offer—
